Saving with Solar in Alberta
Alberta has incentive programs at the Provincial and Municipal level.
Provincial Programs
Alberta Energy Saving for Business
The Energy Savings for Business (ESB) Program has incentives to help businesses install solar to reduce their consumption of utility power. There is up to $250,000 in funding available per project to a maximum of $500,000 per company.
Micro Generation
Excess solar power generated during the day can be exported back to utility as part of their Micro-gen program, for a credit. The credit can be applied for power used at night or during the winter.
Greener Homes Program
Canada launched a new green energy incentive program with grants up to $5,000 and a $600 reimbursement available. The grant applies to solar systems installed on homes across Canada.
The criteria for a PV system under the Greener Homes Program are:
All equipment must be purchased in Canada.
Online purchases are only eligible if they are ordered from an online distributor in Canada.
The system must be composed of photovoltaic (PV) panel and inverter certified to CSA Standards.
The rated PV panel must have peak power capacity higher than or equal to 1.0 kW.
Who’s Eligible?
The application is open to homeowners across Canada for solar upgrades to their primary residence. Indigenous governments or organizations and housing management bodies are also eligible.
Municipal Programs
Edmonton Solar Rebate
The City of Edmonton has a rebate for residential solar installations for $0.40/W up to $4,000. This rebate is in addition to the provincially-funded residential and commercial solar program.
Banff Solar Incentive
Residents of Banff, AB are eligible for a solar power incentive. This program will allow selected applicants to qualify for a seven year agreement with the town of Banff.
Alberta Municipal Solar Program (AMSP)
This program is offered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC). Municipalities and Community related organizations are eligible for this solar power rebate. Funding of up to 25% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $300,000 is available for eligible solar power projects.
